Feb 14th, Valentines Day, a pagan view….
Lupercalia was a pagan celebration. A celebration of lust and fertility.
Lupercus was the queen of the gods, who bore the twin sons, Remus and Romulus.
The twins were raised by a she wolf, and Romulus is considered to be the founder of ancient Rome.
In any case, the festival was practiced throughout much of Europe, not just in Rome.
Young men would go to the temple and make a sacrifice, then would run through the streets whipping crops, young women, and perhaps anything else that suited their fancy. This was thought to ensure fertility.
(dunno about that , but I guess it makes as much sense as getting tied up to a tree, duh.)
So anyways another part of the celebration was a lottery, where the names of girls were placed in clay jars, to be drawn by young men. The lottery established couples for the celebration, and that coupling sometimes lasted for the festival, sometimes for a year, and sometimes for life.
Sometime in the mid 600s AD the Catholic church decided that it was not a proper celebration, and tried to make Romans stop, without success, so they decided to usurp the original purpose and changed it to St. Valentines Day.
In a nutshell, Lupercalia was a wanton celebration of lust in an attempt to produce children.
Nowadays, really, we do have enough children, so the purpose of Lupercalia is at odds with reality.
However, celebrating lust is a good thing, so if anyone is interested, I’d be happy to kill something, and smack yer ass with the bloody hide then fuck yer brains out.
OK, if ya want a damn card, I can do that too I suppose.
